Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

Nerve Conduction Studies can help your physician determine how well the body’s electrical signals are traveling to a nerve. During this part of the examination several nerves may be tested and small electrical stimulations are sent to the nerves to check nerve function. The Neurodiagnostic Technician performs this part of the test.

  • Wash the areas to be tested the night before or morning of testing.
  • Do not apply any lotions, oils, or perfumes on legs/feet and arms/hands and other areas to be studied.
  • For lower extremity studies bring or wear shorts to change into.
  • For upper extremity studies bring or wear short sleeve shirt that is able to be raised up to shoulder level.
  • Please leave wrist jewlry, watches and rings at home.
  • Please inform the Neurodiagnostic technician if you have a pacemaker or other implanted stimulators (such as deep brain stimulator or spinal cord stimulator).
